TACTFUL FASCISM FOR THE CEREMONIOUSLY UNAWARE

Everyone was followed and sat next to.
                            Mine acted impatiently friendly
like a date who expected more.
                            No chance of even communicating
                            with any other cantankerous subversives.
Held my coffee at different obliviousnesses to try.
                            Spilled some while feigning disassociation.
Rolled my eyes from side to side.
Then a response forthcoming from the noisy kitchen,
a word hidden under a cough’s guttural sigh.
“Plonker!” relative to many old friends of mine.
Colin James has a book of poems, Resisting Probability, from
Sagging Meniscus Press. He lives in Massachusetts.
