Minnie-Evans-Untitled Minnie-Evans-Untitled

In this third installment in the occasional series Art Brut (for further information please refer to the previous posts Art Brut and Art Brut II) I am concentrating on four extraordinary 20th Century African-American artists from the Southern States of the US.  Each artist concerns and insights are very different from one another, but they do share some of the overriding attributes common to art brut ; notably the urgent necessity to create, an obsessional desire to give shape and form to the inner realms of experience and vision as well as being late starters, who then prolifically produced exceptional works in a white hot blaze of inspiration.

Minnie Evans

Minnie Evans worked for most of her long life (she died in 1987 at the age of 95) as a domestic and gatekeeper at the Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina. On Good Friday 1935 Evans heard a…

My Thoughts

Where oh where do we start with a review for this book. It’s one of the weirdest things I have ever read – but at the same time it is completely fascinating.

Writing Gloves – Review

I was recently offered an opportunity to review a pair of writing gloves in return for a free pair of my very own. They come from Literary Book Gifts, are available in thirteen different colours and cost $52 (US). From the product name, they’re obviously targeted at writers, but I think they’re suitable for anyone with cold hands who still needs to get stuff done.

I chose a violet pair (see below) and the colour really is lovely – they go great with my stripy black and white jumper. The only problem I have with these gloves is that they are quite snug, almost tight.

It’s really worth taking a look at the website if you’re into books or writing, or need to shop for someone who is. There are T-shirts featuring Poe, Kipling, Stoker and Wilde, not to mention a gorgeous Alice in Wonderland bag.

Disclaimer: I received a free pair of gloves in return for agreeing to write this review. I have been completely honest and have not used affiliate links.

Analysis by David Johnson “The Good Dale is in the Lodge, and He Can’t Leave” In 2006, near Washington, D.C., I went to a reading and discussion David Lynch was giving around his first book, “Catching the Big Fish.” The reading itself was extremely, comically short—just one or two brief sentences. But the Q and […]

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

Having already experienced Mike Russell’s stories, I began this one with an open mind and smile. I knew before I started reading that it would be like nothing I have read before, even his first book and yep after…
