I will do the semiautomatic writing to discover new things. I also like to throw spitwads until they stick, and some of the spitwads tend to group. I like this pile of crap to grow so huge that it bursts and then I can sort everything out. That is how I write. Playing guitar melodies I like to kinda just drop a finger and wherever it falls is where i start. Then when I want to transfer to a pattern with a different tone or modality I drop or raise an octave and try to not pay too much attention to where it falls. It keeps the patterns from being monotonous.
